English: German infantry soldiers (equipped with gas masks) in a cloud of poison gas, 1916, on the Western front in Flanders (either Belgian or French), according to the original caption.
Deutsch: Abweichend von der Bildbeschreibung des Bundesarchivs findet sich bei Hermann Rex (Kriegsfotograf): Der Weltkrieg in seiner rauhen Wirklichkeit. Oberammergau 1926, Bd. II, S. 284, folgende Beschreibung: "In ausgeschwärmten breiten Kolonnen erfolgte der wuchtige Sturmangriff bei Armentières im Frühjahr 1918. Durch feindliches Gas vorstürmende deutsche Infanterie mit Gasmasken versehen". - Da das Bild aber offensichtlich von einem deutschen Fotografen geschossen wurde (auf dessen Standpunkt die Mehrzahl der Soldaten zuläuft) und der Soldat rechts in eine ganz andere Richtung läuft, ist imo (User: Superikonoskop) eher zu vermuten, dass die Soldaten nicht angreifen, sondern aus der Hauptexposition des freiwerdenden Gases fliehen, das aus in der Stellung eingeschlagenen Granaten austritt.
